Recently Google posted on their Search Central blog a new update to the algorithm code named the "link spam update".
It reminds website owners they should continue to use "best practices" and not to use spammy link practices.

Link schemes like these will have a negative impact on your search engine rankings:

  1. Buying or selling links
  2. Excessive link exchanges, or partner link building exchanges
  3. Large-scale article marketing or guest posting campaigns with keyword-rich anchor text links
  4. Automated link builders
  5. Requiring a link as part of a Terms of Service
  6. Low Ranking Directories or bookmark sites

You can use free tools like Ahrefs or Majestic to check your backlinks for spam like the pictured image here.
